With new management, a new name and a new focus all in place, ENL UTC approached us with a need for a new brand to reflect its transition. We were tasked with giving the specialist engineering college a brand-new look and feel that would not only instil pride in its stakeholders (staff, board members, students, employer partners), but also help in its quest to raise awareness and attract new students.

The school wanted to separate itself from preconceptions of engineering as a ‘dirty-hands’ profession, and move instead towards a focus on clean, modern technology.

With the aid of desk research into competing schools in the area and other UTCs across the country, our design team got to work on creating a bold and playful design that would showcase the UTC’s behavioural shift, while setting it apart from the rest.

The capitalised E ident is the nucleus of the concept, and acts as a clear representation of engineering being the core foundation of the education on offer.

The flexibility of the ident as separate visual elements allows the brand to be adaptable in application across all mediums including digital, print and site signage.

The concept received immediate buy-in, with positive feedback focusing on the balance the brand creates between playfulness and professionalism.

We implemented a comprehensive brand roll-out across both online and offline, and helped to set up a launch event to showcase the new look and feel to prospective students, employer partners and the press. The UTC now has a fresh, contemporary brand that is instantly recognisable, and applications and interest in the school have increased as a result.
