When plastic roads company MacRebur opened their new headquarters in Scotland, we gained more than 150 pieces of press coverage by asking one simple question:

Is this the most important new factory in the world?

With public concern over plastic waste growing, it was a hook which generated £90K of publicity value – the equivalent the coverage would have cost in paid-for advertising – and reached an audience of 1.2m.

In print, we were featured in the Scottish Sun, the Daily Record, The Scottish Daily Mail, The Herald and the Scotsman among others.

Online, our reach was even bigger with digital coverage on sites with a combined number of unique visitors per month of 123.5m – yes, that’s right, 123.5m.

We achieved this through stories on key sites such as ITV.com, BBC News Online, Yahoo! News and Mail Online as well as regional newspaper sites across England, Wales, Scotland and NI.

In turn, we saw a huge increase in traffic on the MacRebur website with an 845 per cent increase in hits in the two days after the press release went out, and a 932 per cent increase in new users.

This was timed perfectly with our friends at Clay10 Creative, who had overhauled the website ready for the factory launch (thanks guys!).

But before we’d even sent the release, we’d worked hard to build anticipation towards to opening by arranging an exclusive preview visit for the i newspaper.

The resulting piece gave us an audience reach of 250K and a publicity value of £20K and created an excellent trust signal for other reporters researching the company when it came to the official opening.

This helped us secure further factory visits on the day from national and regional print titles and news crews from the BBC and ITV, who filmed packages for their respective evening news programmes in Scotland and Borders.
